Torre del Colomer

Torre del Colomer is a round watchtower standing in Peramea, a small settlement within the municipality of Baix Pallars, in the Pallars Sobirà region of Lleida province. Sitting at 891 metres above sea level, it rises at one edge of the village, directly across from the ruins of Peramea castle just a short walk away.

What is this place?

The tower dates to the 12th–13th centuries and most likely functioned as a lookout post tied to the nearby castle. In that era, Peramea was a typical fortified Pyrenean settlement: houses clustered around a central square, linked by two arcaded (porticoed) lanes running into the heart of the village. The castle itself, first documented in the 11th century, is associated with the rise of local minor nobility after the year 1000. Today only fragments of its walls survive, perched on a rocky outcrop above the village.

The drive in follows local Pyrenean roads, and visitor parking is available at Plaça de l'Om, the village's main square. From there, the tower and the old quarter are reached on foot, through the enclosed historic core of the settlement.

Spring and autumn are the best seasons for hiking and sightseeing here, when mountain temperatures are milder than the height of summer and the trails see fewer visitors. In summer, an early start helps avoid the midday heat on the more exposed stretches.
