Where is the castle and how do you get there?

The castle ruins sit on a rise above the old town of Sort, right beside the Noguera Pallaresa river. Where did this castle come from?

A fortification likely already stood here in the 8th century, and the earliest written record dates to 1005, when the counts of Pallars ordered the stronghold rebuilt as the seat of their family. A further mention from 1050 confirms additional work on the site. From that point on, the castle served as the residence and power base of the counts of Pallars all the way through the 15th century, and the town of Sort grew up in its shadow.

What happened within its walls?

Between the 13th and 15th centuries, the castle sat at the heart of repeated power struggles within the county. In 1280, Arnau Roger de Pallars joined a noble uprising against King Pere II. Once the revolt was crushed, the rebellious lords were forced to hand over lands and holdings to the crown, Sort among them. Loyalists of the counts of Pallars refused to let it go, though — between the late 13th century and 1327 they seized the fortress by force on several occasions, only for King Jaume II to reclaim it each time.

The final major chapter came with Hug Roger III, the last count of Pallars, who declared his opposition to King Joan II from this very castle in 1460, throwing his support behind the Prince of Viana in the succession struggle for the Crown of Aragon. Defeated, the count was imprisoned in Xàtiva, where he died in 1503, and the county of Pallars itself was sold off to the counts of Cardona, closing the book on the family's independent rule.

What survives to see today?

What remains of the old stronghold is chiefly the outer walls of the palace where the counts of Pallars Sobirà once lived — a substantial stretch of the perimeter still stands, complete with round Romanesque towers. A Gothic façade also catches the eye, with a large arched doorway and two Gothic windows, though it's worth knowing this section has been heavily restored over the years. The former castle grounds now function as a public square, opening onto views over the old town's slate rooftops and the valley of the Noguera Pallaresa.
