Tisovac

Tisovac rises above the Velika municipality in Požega-Slavonia County, north-eastern Croatia, as part of Papuk Nature Park. The peak reaches about 670 metres above sea level and sits in the southern section of the range, close to the park's main southern entrance near Velika.

Where does the name come from?

Papuk was once rich in yew forest, and that history survives in the local place names still used today - besides Tisovac itself, the area also has Tisica and the Tisov stream. Worth keeping in mind: "Tisovac" is a common name across Croatia and Bosnia, shared by several villages and at least one other mountain in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This description covers only the peak on Papuk, directly above Velika.

What will you see on the way up?

From the summit, the view opens toward Jankovac and the surrounding hills - Nevoljaš, Ivačka, Koprivnjak and Česljakovački vis. On the far side of the peak runs the road to Trišnjica, with a stream of the same name flowing through the valley below; tucked into the forest there stands the Trišnjica mountain hut, barely two kilometres from the summit. The nearest higher neighbour is Drenova glava (689 m), about 1.2 km away, while Papuk's highest peak itself (953 m) lies just under 7.5 km from Tisovac.

How do you get to Tisovac?

The popular approach starts at the former Tisica quarry, from where the trail climbs toward the summit. Locally the route is known as "Čokina staza," named after a mountaineer from Požeški Sokolovac, and it's considered the shortest way toward Trišnjica and Česljakovački vis. Most hikers set out from the Velika municipality, where marked trails lead into Papuk Nature Park - this southern side of the range is home to one of the park's main entry points, popular for day trips.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn offer the best hiking conditions - the beech forest covering Papuk's slopes turns fresh green or gold, and temperatures suit longer climbs. In summer, especially at midday, it's worth starting early since parts of the route cross open ground. Winter snow can make the trail harder going, so proper preparation is needed at that time of year.

Papuk is Slavonia's largest mountain range and one of Croatia's geologically oldest areas, protected as a Nature Park and recognised as a UNESCO Global Geopark.
