Mališćak

Mališćak is a peak and viewpoint in the Papuk mountain range, near the village of Radovanci in the Slavonia region of Croatia. It sits at roughly 740 metres above sea level and ranks among the more popular hiking destinations in this part of the country, mainly thanks to the panorama it opens up over the Požega basin and the surrounding hills.

How do you get to Mališćak?

Most trails begin in Velika, a village at the foot of Papuk close to Radovanci. From there a marked path climbs steadily through forest, passing the ruins of the medieval Stari Grad Velika castle and a small chapel dedicated to Saint Augustine along the way. The route is moderately demanding but requires no special equipment beyond sturdy hiking shoes.

Mališćak also works well as a stop on a longer route toward Ivačka Glava, one of the higher points on Papuk. Many hikers combine both destinations into a single day loop, returning to Velika on a different path than the one they started on.

What will you find at the top?

Near the summit stands an open-type stone mountain shelter run by the "Mališćak" Mountaineering Society from Velika, active since 2000 with around fifty members. The shelter serves as a resting point roughly halfway between Velika and Ivačka Glava and is open to hikers without any need to book ahead.

The main draw, though, is the viewpoint itself, known locally as "the Balcony." From here you can look out over the Požega basin, the Krndija range, Česljak ridge, and, on clear days, even peaks across the border in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Photographers and sunset watchers favour the spot because the clearing around the shelter offers an unobstructed, wide-open panorama.

When is the best time to visit?

Spring and autumn are the most rewarding seasons, with mild forest temperatures and generally the clearest views from the top. Summer days can get warm on the exposed stretches, though most of the trail runs under tree cover. In winter the path can turn slippery after snowfall, so proper footwear and a quick weather check beforehand are worth the effort.

The area is also popular with mountain bikers — the route from Velika through Mališćak toward Ivačka Glava is one of the well-known MTB trails in the Papuk region.
