Stráž

Stráž is a modest but rewarding hill rising directly above Rokytnice nad Jizerou, close to the Polish border in the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains. It reaches 782 metres above sea level, with its rocky viewpoint section, known as Strážník, sitting at around 778 metres. Thanks to its easy access and standout modern architecture, it has become one of the most visited lookout spots near the town.

How do you get there?

The easiest way up Stráž is on foot or by bike straight from the centre of Rokytnice nad Jizerou. The route is gentle and needs no special preparation, which makes it a solid choice for families with children. Paths wind through a forest viewpoint park that wraps around the summit, so the walk itself is part of the experience rather than just a means of getting there. Because it sits so close to town, many visitors treat Stráž as a half-day outing rather than a full mountain expedition.

What will you see?

Between 2020 and 2021, four wood-and-metal viewing towers were built on the summit, designed by the Liberec-based architecture studio Mjölk. They are named Liška (Fox), Horník (Miner), Ovce (Sheep) and Medvěd (Bear) — figures taken directly from the coat of arms of Rokytnice nad Jizerou. Each tower has a distinct shape and height, so the view shifts noticeably depending on which one you climb. Together they form a forest viewpoint park called Hlídka na Stráži, which has quickly become one of the region's architectural highlights.

From the towers, the panorama takes in Rokytnice nad Jizerou itself, the nearby villages of Studenov and Paseky nad Jizerou, and further out, Lysá hora and the distinctive massif of Kotel, one of the dominant peaks of the western Krkonoše range. On a clear day, a large stretch of the mountain ridge surrounding the valley is visible from up here.

Where does the name come from?

The name Stráž — literally "watch" or "guard" — is no coincidence. The hill served for centuries as a watch post: in times of danger, signal fires were lit here to warn the surrounding population of an approaching threat. The signal was then relayed onward, including toward Kozákov mountain, from where word could travel deeper into Bohemia. No physical traces of that defensive role survive today, but the name still points to the hill's historical purpose as a lookout point.

When is the best time to visit?

Stráž can be visited year-round, but the clearest views come in spring and autumn, when the air is cleaner and the surrounding peaks stand out sharply. In summer, the viewpoint park draws families and cyclists in large numbers, while in winter Rokytnice nad Jizerou turns into a popular ski destination, giving the view from Stráž's towers over the snow-covered Krkonoše a completely different character.
