Janova skála

Janova skála

Rokytnice nad Jizerou, Czechia

About this place

Janova skála is a rocky outcrop at 1,002 meters above sea level, sitting on a flat, forested ridge running southeast from Čertova hora in the Krkonoše (Giant) Mountains near Rokytnice nad Jizerou. It's one of the quieter spots on the regional map — no crowds, just a genuine forest-ridge hike through spruce woods.

How do you get to Janova skála?

The easiest starting point is Harrachov, where a chairlift takes you up to Čertova hora — from there the route is mostly downhill, making it manageable even with kids in tow. Alternatively, hiking, cycling, and running trails also approach the summit from Studenov and from Harrachov via a loop around Černá hora.

The key landmark along the way is the "U Janovy skály" junction on the blue-marked trail connecting Studenov and Čertova hora. From this junction it's only about 200 meters to the rock itself — a short detour off the main trail that takes just a few minutes to walk.

No specialized gear is needed — standard hiking boots are enough. The spot is accessible year-round, though winter visitors should expect snow on the forested sections.

What will you see there?

Janova skála is a modest rock outcrop rising from the dense spruce forest covering the ridge of Čertova hora. Historically it served as a viewpoint — hence the name "vyhlídka" (lookout) still found on older tourist maps. Today, however, the trees have grown tall enough that the old panorama has essentially disappeared: from the rock itself you mostly see the tops of surrounding spruces rather than the distant Krkonoše peaks.

That doesn't take away from the appeal of the walk itself — climbing up to the rock and strolling along the forested ridge is a calm, low-key experience, well suited as a rest stop on a longer hike between Čertova hora and Rokytnice nad Jizerou. For anyone who enjoys rock formations, the outcrop emerging from the trees is still a distinctive landscape feature worth a short stop.

When should you visit?

Summer and early autumn offer the most comfortable conditions — dry trails, lush forest greenery, and the option to combine the visit with other points of interest around Rokytnice nad Jizerou. In winter, when the Čertova hora chairlift is running, reaching the summit area is quick, but the forested stretch can be snowy and slippery, so sturdier boots are a better choice than light sneakers.

Spring and autumn can bring muddy patches after rain — standard trekking shoes handle this fine, but smooth-soled footwear is not recommended.

Who is this hike for?

Thanks to its gentle grade and the option to shortcut the climb via the chairlift from Harrachov, the hike to Janova skála works well for families with children and anyone looking for a relaxed walk without much physical effort. It also makes a good stopping point for hikers tackling the longer ridge trail between Čertova hora and Rokytnice nad Jizerou who want to break up the route with a short detour to an interesting rock formation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a nice view from Janova skála? Not really, despite what the historical name "vyhlídka" suggests. The forest has grown thick enough that today you mainly see treetops rather than a panorama of the Krkonoše Mountains.

How far is it from the "U Janovy skály" junction to the rock itself? It's a short stretch, about 200 meters off the main blue-marked trail — a few minutes' walk one way.

Is the route suitable for children? Yes, especially if you start from Čertova hora (reached by chairlift from Harrachov) — from there the trail runs mostly downhill and is easy going.

What gear do you need? Standard hiking boots are sufficient for most of the year. In winter, boots with good grip are worth having, since the forested sections can hold snow.
