Stráň

Slavkov pod Hostýnem, Czechia

About this place

Stráň is a small but ecologically valuable nature reserve on the northwestern slope of the Hostýnské vrchy hills, just a few hundred metres from the upper edge of the village of Slavkov pod Hostýnem in the Kroměříž district. It covers an area of 8.6358 hectares and has been protected since 1992.

Where exactly is Stráň located?

The reserve stretches across a grassy slope with a gradient of 10 to 30 degrees, wedged into the forested western flank of Hostýn peak (734.6 metres above sea level). Solitary linden trees and several groups of pine trees grow across the site, giving the landscape its distinctive, semi-open character — a meadow embedded within the forest that carries considerable scenic and aesthetic value. The terrain sits at an elevation of 450 to 580 metres.

What does the reserve protect?

Stráň was established to preserve a semi-natural ecosystem of single-cut Carpathian meadows and pastures. This habitat has allowed rare and endangered plant species to survive, above all orchids. Particularly valuable is the population of the pale orchid (Orchis pallens), which flowers early in spring. The meadow vegetation here is dominated by mesophilic oat-grass meadows alongside plant communities shaped by historical grazing.

Why are these particular meadows so valuable?

The character of the vegetation on the Stráň slope was shaped over centuries by grazing and mowing — this traditional land management is precisely what kept the meadow landscape open and species-rich. Without regular mowing or grazing, such meadows would quickly become overgrown with forest and lose their biodiversity. The area was also considered as part of a territory proposed for the national list of sites significant under the Natura 2000 system, underlining its importance beyond the immediate region.

How is the site managed today?

Active conservation relies on regular mowing: the most valuable sections of the meadow are cut by hand, while the rest is managed with a mountain mower suited to steep terrain. In the past, pine groves in the middle section of the slope were also significantly thinned. This intervention proved especially beneficial for the pale orchid, whose population strengthened noticeably once shading and competition from trees was reduced.

Is it worth visiting?

Stráň is a destination for those interested in nature, botany, and quiet walks through the Hostýnské vrchy, rather than a typical tourist attraction with visitor infrastructure. It is at its most rewarding in spring, when the orchids bloom, and in summer, when the full diversity of the meadow vegetation is on display. The reserve lies right next to Slavkov pod Hostýnem, making it easy to combine a visit with a stroll through the village itself or a longer hike toward the summit of Hostýn.
