Holíkova rezervace

Držková, Czechia

About this place

Holíkova rezervace is a small but ecologically significant protected area in the Hostýn Hills, about one kilometre north of the village of Držková in the Zlín region of the Czech Republic. Covering just 6.2223 hectares, this patch of forest sits on the summit of Horní Lázek (566 metres above sea level) and has been legally protected as a nature monument since 1987.

What is being protected here?

The reserve was established to preserve a mixed forest dominated by European beech. The tree canopy consists mainly of mature beeches, accompanied by silver fir, sycamore maple, and common ash. In some parts of the forest, Norway spruce also makes up a notable share, a legacy of earlier forestry practices. Despite this, the old-growth beech stand gives the area a character reminiscent of the original Carpathian forest that once covered this part of the landscape.

What does the terrain look like?

In the northwestern section of the reserve, rock outcrops break through the surface, adding variety to the landscape and forming distinctive rocky ridges visible among the trees. These outcrops, combined with the mature forest, are what make the reserve particularly picturesque and appealing to visitors seeking quiet contact with nature away from busier trails.

Why visit this reserve?

Holíkova rezervace suits travellers who enjoy calm, low-key forest walks away from crowds. Its small size means a visit doesn't take long, but the dense old-growth trees, rocky outcrops, and untouched character of the woodland create a sense of seclusion that's harder to find in the region's larger, better-known reserves. It makes a good addition to a short trip exploring the area around Držková and the wider Hostýn Hills.

How to get to the reserve?

The reserve lies roughly one kilometre north of the centre of Držková, on the summit of Horní Lázek. The easiest approach is on foot from the village itself, following local roads and forest paths that climb the slope. The surrounding Hostýn Hills also offer other viewpoints and trails that can be combined with a visit to the reserve as part of a longer hike.
