About this place
Bernátka is a small nature reserve (přírodní památka) in the Hostýnské vrchy hills in eastern Czechia, roughly 7 km south of the village of Rajnochovice. It covers only about 3 hectares, yet despite its modest size it protects one of the finest surviving fragments of forest in the entire range — a near-untouched Carpathian fir-beech woodland, a habitat type that has become increasingly rare across the region.
Where exactly is Bernátka located?
The protected area sits at an elevation of 545 to 595 metres, on a south- and southeast-facing valley slope crossed by unnamed left-bank tributaries of the Juhyně stream. A useful landmark is the Bernátka forest lodge: the reserve lies about 400 metres northeast of the trail junction beside it, and roughly 700 metres from the recreation centre at Troják. It's worth knowing in advance that Bernátka itself lies off the marked hiking trail network, so reaching it takes a bit more route planning than a typical waymarked walk.
What grows inside the reserve?
The main reason this small patch of forest was placed under protection is its well-preserved, typically Carpathian fir-beech stand. European beech (Fagus sylvatica) clearly dominates the canopy, with silver fir (Abies alba) present as an admixed species — a tree that in much of Central Europe has largely been pushed out by forestry favouring faster-growing species.
The real botanical highlight of Bernátka, though, is a forest-floor plant: three-leaved cress (Cardamine trifolia). This is an Alpine–West Carpathian species that in Czechia survives only at a handful of isolated sites, and the Bernátka reserve is one of them. Its abundant presence in the understorey signals a habitat in genuinely good ecological condition with a long, unbroken continuity — this kind of old-growth fir-beech community cannot be recreated quickly, which is exactly why every remaining fragment of it carries real conservation value.
Who is this place for?
Bernátka isn't a conventional tourist attraction with visitor infrastructure, information boards at every turn, or a dedicated nature trail — it is primarily a site of scientific and conservation importance. It appeals most to nature enthusiasts, amateur botanists, and hikers planning a longer route through the Hostýnské vrchy who want to seek out the range's quieter, less obvious corners, away from its more heavily visited peaks and viewpoints.

How large is the reserve? Bernátka covers an area of roughly 3 hectares.
What is the reserve's most notable natural feature? An abundant population of three-leaved cress (Cardamine trifolia), a rare Alpine–West Carpathian species that in Czechia occurs at only a few isolated sites.
How far is Bernátka from Rajnochovice? About 7 km south of the village, within the Hostýnské vrchy hills.
