About this place
Pod Kozincem is a small nature monument on the eastern flank of the Kozinec hill (479.1 m), roughly 1 km northwest of the village center of Chvalčov, in the Kroměříž District of the Zlín Region in Moravia, Czech Republic. It sits within the western part of the Hostýnské vrchy (Hostýn Hills), at an elevation of 370–550 m, and covers an area of 20.4 hectares.
What is being protected here?
The site preserves single-cut, subalpine meadows of a Carpathian type — grassland shaped by centuries of low-intensity mowing rather than intensive farming. That traditional management is exactly what allowed a rich, specialized flora to survive here. The area has held protected status since 1955, making it one of the older designated sites in this part of Moravia.
Which plants make this meadow special?
The reserve's main claim to fame is its orchids. The common spotted orchid (Dactylorhiza fuchsii) grows here in an unusually wide range of color forms, from pale pink to deep purple. Alongside it are the elder-flowered orchid (Dactylorhiza sambucina) and the green-winged orchid (Orchis morio, also known as the May orchid) — both specially protected species under Czech nature conservation law. The meadow flora is completed by marsh gentian (Gentiana pneumonanthe), a plant that only thrives on damp, unimproved grassland and has become increasingly rare across Central Europe as such meadows are drained or intensified.
Having this many orchid species concentrated in such a small area is itself telling: it means the Pod Kozincem meadows were never fertilized heavily, plowed, or converted to more productive farmland, which let their original plant composition survive largely intact.
Why is it worth a visit?
For anyone interested in botany or wildflowers, Pod Kozincem offers a rare chance to see several native orchid species within a short walk — something increasingly hard to find in much of Europe. The reserve lies within the Hostýnské vrchy, a range known for gentle, forested hills and a dense network of hiking trails, so a stop here fits easily into a longer walk through the surrounding countryside. Its proximity to Chvalčov, a well-known local resort village, also means the site is easy to reach without a long detour.
Because it is a protected area, visitors should keep to marked paths and avoid picking any plants, including the orchids — the meadow's flora is sensitive to trampling and its survival depends on minimal disturbance outside the traditional mowing regime.
