About this place
Solar Condes de Resende is a historic manor house in Canelas, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia, just across the river from Porto. Today it serves as the Municipal House of Culture (Casa Municipal da Cultura), surrounded by carefully kept gardens. It is also known as Quinta da Costa.
What is the history of Solar Condes de Resende?
The first documented mention of the estate dates to 1042, in the so-called Carta de Negrelos. Because of this, the manor is presumed to have been built in the late 10th or early 11th century, which makes it one of the oldest documented noble houses in the area.
Over the centuries the property passed through several families, including the Baldaia family and the Viscounts of Beire. In the late 19th century it belonged to the Counts of Resende. The present name comes from this family, which was linked to the wife of the writer Eça de Queirós and spent part of its summers here.
In 1984 the municipality of Vila Nova de Gaia bought the estate and adapted it for a new role as a cultural centre for residents and visitors.
What can you see inside?
Today the solar works as a cultural institution. It houses a Documentation and Archive Centre and the collection of Marciano Azuaga. There is also a collection linked to the Gaia-born writer J. Rentes de Carvalho, as well as the municipality's reserves of archaeological artefacts. Check the Gaia city website for current exhibitions and events before you go.
What gardens surround the manor?
The gardens are a major draw. The Jardim das Japoneiras, the camellia garden, is known for trees more than a hundred years old. The second is the Jardim Eça de Queiroz, planted in honour of the famous 19th-century Portuguese writer. A walk along its paths is a good way to slow down away from the city bustle. Camellias look their best in the cooler months, when they bloom.
Where is it and who is it for?
The solar stands in the parish of Canelas, outside the urban centre of Gaia, in a quiet setting. It suits visitors interested in regional history, Portuguese literature and the architecture of old manor houses. It also works as a stop for those who, after seeing Porto and the Gaia wine cellars, want a calmer, less touristy place. A visit does not take long: an hour or two is enough for the gardens and the interior.
