About this place
Alminhas da Ponte is a small memorial shrine on the Ribeira waterfront in Porto, just a short walk from the Dom Luís I Bridge. It commemorates one of the darkest days in the city's history: the collapse of the Ponte das Barcas pontoon bridge on 29 March 1809.
What are alminhas?
Alminhas are Portuguese wayside shrines dedicated to the souls of the dead. They usually depict souls in purgatory and invite passers-by to pray. The one in Porto is unusual because it joins that folk tradition with the memory of a specific event.
What happened in 1809?
The bridge of boats, made of about twenty vessels linked by steel cables, opened in August 1806 and served for years as the crossing over the Douro at this point. In March 1809, during the second French invasion led by Marshal Soult, residents fleeing the advancing army rushed onto it in huge numbers. The structure could not bear the weight and gave way. Estimates of the death toll differ, from hundreds to several thousand people.
What does the monument look like?
The bronze bas-relief was made in 1897 by sculptor António Teixeira Lopes. It combines bronze, marble and wrought iron and is set into a wall beside one of the arches of the quay. The scene shows souls reaching upward, giving the memorial a solemn but not overwhelming feel.
Why stop here?
It is easy to miss among the crowds strolling through Ribeira, which is exactly why it deserves a pause. Locals still leave lit candles and flowers here, so this is a living place of remembrance rather than a museum piece. You can easily pair the visit with a walk nearby: the Dom Luís I Bridge, the Douro quay and the narrow lanes of Ribeira are all minutes away.
