About this place
The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Piety (Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Piedade) stands in Sanfins do Douro, in the municipality of Alijó in northern Portugal. It is a religious complex on a hilltop above the Douro valley, combining a pilgrimage site, a viewpoint and traces of the region's very old past.
What is inside the sanctuary?
The complex includes the Chapel of Our Lady of Piety and small chapels marking the Way of the Cross (Via Sacra). It also has the Hall of Miracles and Promises (Sala dos Milagres e Promessas), where the faithful leave offerings and thanks. Visitors will also find a panoramic café and restaurant, a picnic area and a viewpoint.
Five chapels were built here in the second half of the 19th century. Together they form a route that pilgrims follow towards the main chapel.
What is the history of the site?
Before the sanctuary existed, the hill was home to a Lusitanian hill fort (castro). A few remains survive, including two funerary stelae with inscriptions. During expansion works in 1958, sixty-three Roman coins were found in an earthen pot. Some were stolen in 1985, and ten were recovered by the Judicial Police in 2018.
What is the Nossa Senhora da Piedade pilgrimage?
The sanctuary hosts an annual romaria, a pilgrimage and popular festival that dates back to the 18th century. It lasts five days, starting on the first Thursday of August and ending on the second Tuesday of the month. This is the busiest time of year, when pilgrims and people from nearby villages fill the grounds.
