Igreja do Desterro

Lamego, Portugal

About this place

Igreja do Desterro is a 17th-century church in Lamego, northern Portugal (Viseu district), standing on Largo do Desterro. It blends Mannerist restraint with Baroque richness, and its interior is filled with gilded woodcarving and tile panels. It holds Imóvel de Interesse Público status, granted by Decree no. 40361 of 20 October 1955.

Who founded the church, and when?

The church was founded in 1640 by Frei Luís Álvares de Távora, bailiff of Leça. It rose on the site of an earlier small chapel where Nossa Senhora do Desterro, Our Lady of the Exile, was venerated. That devotion gave the church its name.

What does the architecture look like?

The building is rectangular in plan. It has a single nave, a main chapel (capela-mor), a sacristy and a side tower. Art historians describe it as a transitional work, moving from the sober lines of Mannerism toward the exuberant decoration of the Baroque.

The façade is marked by a framed round-arched portal flanked by two Corinthian columns. Above it sits an interrupted pediment holding the founder's coat of arms.

What is there to see inside?

The interior is the main reason to step in.

  • The ceiling is coffered, carved and polychrome, with painted images set into the panels.
  • The walls are lined with azulejo tile panels.
  • The woodcarving dates from the 18th century and is gilded. The side altars are credited to Lamego master carvers Manuel Martins and Manuel de Gouveia. The main altar and tribune were made by Manuel Machado.
  • The paintings in the body of the chapel show the Annunciation, the Adoration of the Magi, the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Presentation in the Temple.

Why visit?

Lamego is best known for the Baroque sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Igreja do Desterro is more modest and easy to overlook. For anyone interested in Portuguese religious art, it is a quiet, worthwhile stop. Painting, tilework and gilded timber carving come together in a single interior.
