About this place
Igreja de São Mamede de Ribatua is the parish church of the village of São Mamede de Ribatua in the municipality of Alijó, Vila Real district, northern Portugal. It is recorded as a cultural heritage monument and counted among the municipality's notable architectural sites. A stop here rewards anyone willing to leave the busier parts of the Douro and see a working wine-country village.
Where is the church, and what is the village like?
The church sits in a village about 356 m above sea level, in the Alto Douro wine region. The parish covers roughly 20 square kilometres and had 586 residents in 2021. The landscape is agricultural: vineyards, olive groves and scrub, divided by schist walls and dotted with granite wine cellars known as adegas. Earth tracks link the surrounding hamlets.
What is its history?
The parish is old. Records from the 1220 royal inquiries list it, as São Mamede de Riba-Tua, among five parishes in what is now the Alijó area. Local accounts add that the settlement held town status from 1162 and served as the seat of its own municipality until the early nineteenth century. The church belongs to a centre that handled local administration for centuries.
What can you see?
The church is the main stop. There is no museum or interpretation centre, so the visit is a short walk. Look at the local schist and granite building style. The village also keeps its pelourinho, a stone pillory column that marks its former civic rank. From the cemetery, reachable on foot or by car, the view opens over the Douro valley and, on clear days, towards Spain.
How do you get there?
Leave the A24 motorway at Alijó, then follow the N213 and the M514 to the village. Two buses run on weekdays from Alijó, taking about 15 minutes. A car is more convenient, especially if you combine the visit with a tour of nearby vineyards.
When should you go?
Village festivals are the best time. On Easter Sunday a procession crosses the village, with stalls selling wine and roast suckling pig. Nossa Senhora dos Aflitos is celebrated on 15 August, and Nossa Senhora da Piedade on the third Sunday of September. September also brings the start of the grape harvest, when the terraces look their best. The average annual temperature is about 14.6°C, with around 780 mm of rain a year.
