Sant Salvador de Montmajor

Sant Salvador de Montmajor is a small Romanesque church standing in the hamlet of Correà, part of the municipality of Montmajor in the Berguedà comarca, Barcelona province. Also known as Sant Salvador de Coll d'Alzina and Sant Salvador de l'Hospital, the building has been abandoned for generations and today survives as little more than a ruin — yet it still draws visitors interested in rural Romanesque architecture and local history.

Based on these architectural features, historians date the building to the second half of the 12th century.

Its state of conservation is poor: the church has lost its roof entirely, and the southern wall is gradually collapsing. No legal protection currently covers the building, which means the exposed structure keeps deteriorating with each passing season.

What is known about its history?

During the Middle Ages the church most likely functioned as a dependent chapel of the nearby Sant Sadurní de Montmajor. By the 14th century, however, it had come under the authority of the parish of Sant Martí de Correà, the neighbouring settlement that gave the church one of its alternative names. A surviving document from 1337 records that the rector of Correà was obliged to celebrate four masses a year at Sant Salvador — evidence that the site retained religious importance for local people even after losing its parish status.
