Porážky

Slavkov, Czechia

About this place

Porážky is a national nature reserve in the White Carpathians on Moravia's eastern border, near the villages of Nová Lhota, Vápenky, and Suchov, straddling the Hodonín and Uherské Hradiště districts. The reserve covers nearly 50 hectares at elevations between 400 and 640 meters above sea level, surrounded by an additional buffer zone of more than 370 hectares called Přední louky.

Why is this place protected?

Porážky safeguards some of the most valuable flower-rich meadows in the White Carpathians — a mosaic of dry steppe grasslands and damp lowland meadows dotted with scattered, spreading oak trees. The area was granted protected status on 17 June 1987, reconfirmed in a new legal form in 1991, and celebrated thirty years of protection in 2017. Under IUCN classification, it falls into Category IV.

The bedrock consists of Tertiary-period flysch layers — limestone clays and sandstones prone to landslides, which shape the area's distinctive, broken terrain. This geology is precisely what creates the patchwork of dry and wet habitats responsible for the reserve's extraordinary species richness.

What makes the flora of Porážky so remarkable?

Botanists have recorded nearly 300 to 317 plant species within the reserve, roughly 40 of which are legally protected. In 2014, a single 16-square-meter plot yielded 109 plant species — a result considered a world record for meadow biodiversity density.

The reserve's emblematic species is the lofty lousewort (Pedicularis exaltata), whose only Czech population grows here, with the nearest other populations found in Ukraine and Romania. The plant was nearly wiped out in the 1970s after land reclamation work in 1978 caused severe soil erosion. Hand-mowing and the transplanting of cultivated specimens allowed the population to recover, and today more than 200 plants bloom here each year. The reserve is also renowned for its orchid diversity — around twenty species grow here, including the lady's slipper orchid, alongside several species of gentian.

What wildlife lives here?

The forest-steppe landscape supports a diverse range of invertebrates and birds. Notable butterflies include the marsh fritillary and the clouded Apollo, while among grasshoppers is a rare species found only in the White Carpathians. Bird life includes meadow specialists such as the corncrake and the lesser grey shrike, and imperial eagles have occasionally been observed hunting over the reserve.

How is the reserve managed?

Preserving this unique habitat mosaic requires continuous human intervention. The meadows are mown in a mosaic pattern, and conservation relies on agreements with local farmers who graze and mow the land according to nature-protection guidelines.
