About this place
Ponte e Calçada Medieval de Algoso is a stone bridge with a surviving stretch of old paved road in the village of Algoso, in the municipality of Vimioso, in the Trás-os-Montes region of northeastern Portugal (Bragança district). It is a quiet heritage stop for travellers who like to combine a walk with a bit of rural Portuguese history.
Where is the bridge?
The bridge lies by the village of Algoso, in the northeast of Portugal not far from the Spanish border. It crosses the Angueira river. The surrounding countryside is agricultural and sparsely populated, so expect no crowds and very little tourist infrastructure. The coordinates are roughly 41.453 N, 6.575 W.
What is its history?
According to the national heritage inventory (SIPA), the bridge was built in the medieval period but was destroyed by a flood in 1707. It was rebuilt between 1727 and 1738, so what you see today is a medieval-modern structure rather than a purely medieval one. Later alterations left the deck largely level instead of arched, as is typical of medieval bridges, and the three-span layout is another sign that the present form dates from after the Middle Ages.
What is it made of?
The main material is schist, used for the masonry. Granite appears where more strength was needed: in the arch voussoirs and in the cutwaters, the pointed piers that split the current. The surviving surface is mostly beaten earth with patches of old cobbles.
What is the "calçada"?
A calçada is a paved road. The bridge belonged to an old route linking two medieval fortified villages, Penas Róias and Algoso. Long stretches of the original paving still survive, so you can walk part of a road that locals have used for centuries.
Link to Algoso castle
The bridge is tied to the story of Algoso castle, which was handed to the Order of the Hospitallers around 1224. A short medieval paved path leads to the bridge from the Castelo de Algoso hiking trail (PR4 VMS). It makes sense to combine the bridge with a visit to the castle and the village.
Protection status
Sources do not fully agree on the legal status. SIPA states that the classification procedure opened in 2007 lapsed on 23 October 2009. Another local source describes it as under evaluation for classification, with the deadline extended to the end of 2012. For the current situation, check the official SIPA record.

Can I walk to it? Yes, a short paved path branches off the Castelo de Algoso trail.
Is there an entrance fee? No information on fees was found. It is an open site beside a road and trail, but check with Vimioso's local tourist information before you go.
Who is it for?
Fans of engineering heritage, walkers and anyone looking for lesser-known corners of Portugal. Plan a short stop on the way to Algoso castle, and bring sturdy shoes: the surface is uneven, with beaten earth mixed with stone paving.
