Câmara Municipal de Alfândega da Fé

Alfândega da Fé, Portugal

About this place

Câmara Municipal de Alfândega da Fé is the seat of local government in the small town of Alfândega da Fé, in the Bragança district of north-eastern Portugal. The council works from a landmark townhouse known as the Casa Grande, the "Great House", in the middle of the town.

What is the Casa Grande?

The house was commissioned by Júlio Pereira, a man who made his money in Angola and came home to put up an imposing residence in the heart of the village. Work began around 1910-1911. The property later passed through other owners before the municipality bought it. Today it serves as the Paços do Concelho, the town hall. Dr Manuel Faria also lived here and opened the house to the public; the auditorium of the town's Casa da Cultura carries his name.

Where is it and how do you get there?

The council's address is Largo D. Dinis, 5350-014 Alfândega da Fé. It stands in the town centre, so everything else in the settlement is a short walk away. The municipality lies deep in Trás-os-Montes and borders Macedo de Cavaleiros, Mogadouro, Torre de Moncorvo, Vila Flor and Mirandela. Driving from Mirandela or Macedo de Cavaleiros is the easiest approach.

What else is nearby?

The municipal heritage map lists a separate building, the former Paços do Concelho, next to the Casa Grande, together with the Casa da Cultura and several churches and chapels. The medieval Alfândega da Fé castle also stands in the town. The surrounding countryside is typical of the region: almond, cherry and chestnut orchards, cork oak groves, and pastures for sheep and goats, which underpin the local economy. The municipality had just over 4,300 residents in 2021, so the pace is quiet and rural.

Can you go inside?

The building is a working administrative office, so visits mean admiring the exterior and its surroundings, or handling official business during opening hours. The municipality posts visitor information and cultural events on its website. Combine a stop here with a stroll through the centre and a look at the nearby Casa da Cultura.
