Casa Grande de Freixo de Numão

Vila Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal

About this place

Casa Grande de Freixo de Numão – a Baroque manor and museum in the Côa valley

Casa Grande de Freixo de Numão is an eighteenth-century stone manor in the village of Freixo de Numão, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Foz Côa, northern Portugal. Today it houses a museum combining archaeological and ethnographic collections, and the building itself is a recognised cultural heritage monument.

What is the Casa Grande?

It is a solar, the seat of a wealthy noble family. It was built in the 1700s, when Freixo de Numão was still the head of its own municipality and local elites raised showy residences here. The Casa Grande is one of them. It is described as a Baroque house with Rococo touches, built of stone on a rectangular plan. It consists of a residential wing with a chapel attached at one end. A large family coat of arms on the second-floor façade shows the standing of its former owners.

How did the manor become a museum?

In the twentieth century the house fell into ruin. It was rescued by the local cultural, sports and recreation association of Freixo de Numão, which bought the manor in 1983 and turned it into a museum space. The building survived, and now serves residents and visitors again.

What can you see inside?

The exhibition follows two main threads.

  • Archaeology. The collection comes from successive excavation campaigns in the parish of Freixo de Numão. It spans the Palaeolithic to the modern era, with special emphasis on the Roman period. The area is known for its rich archaeological sites, so the museum is a good introduction to the region.
  • Ethnography. A separate section shows traditional village life: farming tools, objects linked to bread-making and shepherding, and to the production of wine, olive oil and almonds, the foundations of the local economy for generations.

Who is it for?

The Casa Grande suits visitors who enjoy architecture and local history in a small, quiet village. It is a good stop on a trip around the Foz Côa region, best known for prehistoric rock art and vineyards. A visit shows how both the nobility and ordinary villagers lived.
