Peñafiel Castle

Castillo de Peñafiel is a medieval fortress standing in the municipality of Zarza la Mayor, in the province of Cáceres, in Spanish Extremadura. It has nothing to do with the far more famous Castillo de Peñafiel in Valladolid province, known worldwide for its Ribera del Duero vineyards — this is a different, much lesser-known stronghold, tucked into the rugged borderland with Portugal.

Where does the name come from and what is the castle's history?

The fortress sits atop a massive outcrop overlooking the gorge of the Eljas River, which marks the Spanish-Portuguese border at this point, roughly 3 km from the center of Zarza la Mayor. It began as a Muslim stronghold called Racha-Rachel; after the Reconquista, Christian rulers replaced the name with the Castilian "Peñafiel" ("loyal rock"). From 1251 onward, the fortress became the seat of an encomienda held by the military Order of Alcántara, administering the surrounding land under the name "Encomienda de Peñafiel y la Çarça" — the very origin of the town name Zarza la Mayor. The castle's current structure, including its distinctive keep (torre del homenaje), was built in stages between 1322 and 1475. Its position on the border made it a recurring flashpoint in Spanish-Portuguese conflicts: in June 1665, during the Portuguese Restoration War, Portuguese forces captured the town of Zarza la Mayor itself, underlining how strategically sensitive this stretch of frontier once was.

Since this is an isolated rural site with no ticket booth or on-site staff, sturdy footwear and water are worth packing — the approach crosses rocky, semi-wild terrain.

The main surviving feature is the keep, rising from the top of the rock outcrop and visible as a landmark across much of the surrounding countryside. From its base, the view opens onto the Eljas River gorge and the folded, stony borderland scenery, now part of the protected Tajo Internacional Natural Park — one of the last stretches of a border river in Europe to remain this wild. Given the exposed, rocky terrain and lack of covered infrastructure, spring or autumn are the most comfortable seasons, when Extremadura's temperatures are milder than in the height of summer. The Tajo Internacional Natural Park is also an important birdwatching area — Zarza la Mayor even hosts a local bird festival — so the spring migration period adds an extra reason to time a visit around then.
