Pazo de Tor

Pazo de Tor is a baroque manor house in the village of Tor, in the municipality of Monforte de Lemos, in the province of Lugo, Galicia. It now operates as an ethnographic museum, offering a rare look at how the Galician nobility lived on their country estates in the 18th century.

Where did this manor come from?

The original house on this site dates back to the 14th century and belonged to the Garza de Castrillón lineage. Most of the building standing today, however, was constructed in the final third of the 18th century — the earlier structure was destroyed by fire after the estate was attacked by French troops during the Peninsular War. The pazo was rebuilt afterward, though some traces of the oldest parts of the estate survive.

The house changed hands for the last time in the 20th century, when its final owner, María de la Paz Taboada de Andrés y Zúñiga, donated it to the Provincial Council (Diputación) of Lugo. Her one condition: the house had to remain open free of charge to residents and visitors alike, with its interiors and layout kept exactly as she had left them. Today the property belongs to the Provincial Museum Network of Lugo.

A visit to the pazo is a walk through the private world of an 18th-century noble household. The highlight is the library, holding close to 3,000 volumes spanning the 16th through the 20th century — one of the more remarkable private book collections preserved in the region. The house also contains a chapel, whose altarpiece dates from the early 20th century.

Furniture, everyday objects and interior decoration have been left almost untouched, which is why Pazo de Tor is considered one of the best-preserved examples of a Galician noble residence — not a sanitized display case, but a house that still looks lived-in.

The gardens surrounding the pazo hold a surprise that younger visitors in particular tend to love: a stone maze. It's one of the most popular spots on a walk around the estate and a nice place to pause after touring the interior.
