Passos de Ovar

Ovar, Portugal

About this place

Passos de Ovar is a group of seven eighteenth-century chapels in the town of Ovar, in Portugal's Aveiro District. They are also known as the Capelas dos Passos or the Passos da Via Sacra de Ovar. Together they mark a route tied to Lenten ceremonies and symbolically depict the successive stages of the Passion of Christ.

What are the Passos de Ovar?

In Portuguese, "passos" means "steps" or "stations". In Ovar, each small chapel corresponds to one moment on Christ's way to Calvary. Inside, altarpiece compositions (retables) illustrate the scene in question. The result is an open-air Way of the Cross woven into the town itself rather than contained within one church.

Which stations does the route include?

The seven chapels are named:

  • the Praetorium,
  • the Step of the Garden,
  • the Step of the Meeting,
  • the Step of the Cyrenian,
  • the Step of Veronica,
  • the Step of the Daughters of Jerusalem,
  • Calvary, shown in traditional iconography.

The order follows the Passion narrative, so visiting the chapels one after another lets you follow the story step by step.

When were the chapels built?

Devotion to the Passion in Ovar goes back to the first half of the 15th century. The present chapels, built of stone and lime, date from between 1747 and 1755. They replaced earlier wooden ones. Construction was made possible when the king granted a tax of one real on each quartilho of wine sold in Ovar and its surroundings, and the proceeds helped pay for the whole complex.

Heritage protection

The Passos de Ovar are classified as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público). The classification was granted by Decree No. 37,450, published in the Diário do Governo No. 129 on 16 June 1946. The ensemble is regarded as an exemplary piece of the region's religious architecture.

Why visit?

The chapels show how a local community kept its Lenten tradition alive over the centuries. They are linked to the Lenten processions, long an important religious event in Ovar. For travellers, they offer a chance to combine a walk through town with a look at Baroque-era sacred architecture and Portuguese popular devotion.

The site lies in the centre of Ovar, in the municipality of Ovar, roughly 40 km south of Porto, in the Aveiro region. Coordinates are about 40.859 N, 8.622 W. The route has seven separate stops, so plan an unhurried walk and check beforehand whether the interiors are open, as access to the chapels may vary with the season and the liturgical calendar.
