Parque Nossa Senhora dos Milagres

Parque Nossa Senhora dos Milagres is the oldest municipal park in São João da Madeira, spread across one of the town's hills and wrapped around a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Miracles. How did this place come to be?

The park grew out of a community effort: residents of São João da Madeira donated funds to build a chapel honoring Nossa Senhora dos Milagres. The foundation stone was blessed on 4 November 1934, and the completed sanctuary and surrounding park opened formally on 6 November 1938, in a ceremony led by the Bishop of Porto, António Augusto de Castro Meireles. The chapel project was coordinated by Doctor Serafim Leite, with construction carried out by Jacinto de Matos together with a group of dedicated local youth. The park layout itself was designed by architect Sidónio Pardal, following the style typical of early-20th-century public gardens — winding paths, viewpoints, and shaded rest areas.
