About this place
Nossa Senhora da Ajuda Church in Espinho is a Roman Catholic parish church in the Portuguese coastal city of Espinho, on the Atlantic shore of northern Portugal. It serves as the city's mother church, and its story is closely tied to the growth of Espinho itself.
What is the history of the church?
Devotion to the image of Our Lady of Help (Nossa Senhora da Ajuda) began in the Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Guia, built in 1808. That chapel was demolished in 1883, when the first chapel dedicated to the town's patron was blessed. In 1886 it was raised to the rank of church, and when Espinho became a parish in 1889, it became the parish church.
When was the current building constructed?
Work on the present church began in 1930 under Father Joaquim Teixeira Silva Amaral. It was meant to replace the chapel at Praça Nova, which stood in an area overrun by the sea. Building a new church elsewhere was therefore a response to the threat facing the seaside town.
Who designed it, and in what style?
The architect was Adães Bermudes. The building shows a modernised revivalist taste with neo-Romanesque features, following a type widespread in Portugal in the second half of the nineteenth century. The floor plan is a Latin cross with a single nave and a transept.
The main facade is marked by an imposing bell tower. In front of it, a short flight of steps leads up to the noble portal.
Where is the church?
The church stands in the centre of Espinho, at roughly 41.0057° N, 8.6406° W. The city lies on the coast south of Porto, so a visit fits easily into a walk around the town and its seafront.
