Parque Temático da Madeira

Santana, Portugal

About this place

Parque Temático da Madeira (Madeira Theme Park) is an open-air attraction in Santana on Madeira's north coast, opened in October 2004. Forget roller coasters: it blends a museum, a garden and a playground, and it tells the story of the island's history, science and traditions.

What is there to see?

The core of the park is four multimedia pavilions: "Discovery of the Islands", "Future of the Earth", "Fantastic Voyage in Madeira" and "A World of Islands, The Islands of the World". Together they cover the age of exploration, the natural world and the island's place on the globe. A separate pavilion is designed for children.

The grounds also hold a village of traditional Santana houses, the steep-roofed A-frame cottages that symbolise this part of Madeira. Craftspeople demonstrate old skills such as wool and linen weaving and Madeiran embroidery. You will also spot a windmill, ox carts and a model of a typical Santana house.

Is it good for families?

Yes, it is often recommended for families. There is a large playground, a maze and a lake where you can take a boat or stroll along the shore. A replica of the Monte train recalls the historic transport once used around Funchal. A small rural-style farm area, the quintinha, adds to the mix.

Gardens and plants

The park doubles as a garden. It gathers endemic Madeiran plant species, so a walk along its paths is an easy way to meet the local flora without heading into the mountains.

How long should I plan?

Allow two to four hours. Many visitors describe it as an interactive open-air museum rather than a typical amusement park. It suits families, groups and school trips. A cafe on site makes a longer stay comfortable.
