About this place
The Municipal Garden of Funchal (Portuguese: Jardim Municipal do Funchal) is a green retreat in the middle of Madeira's capital, a short walk from the old town and the waterfront. It covers well under a hectare, yet it gathers plants from several continents, which is why locals and visitors alike come here for shade after a walk through the city.
How did the garden come to be?
For several centuries this site belonged to the Monastery of Saint Francis. Once the convent was gone, the town council appointed a commission of councillors in 1878 to draw up a garden project for the former monastery grounds. Work began in 1880, and the first decorative plants were brought from Paris and Porto. The French landscape architect Édouard François André laid out the garden. In 1885 it was named Jardim Municipal, meaning Municipal Garden, and the name was later changed in memory of Queen Amélia, so you may also see it called Jardim Dona Amélia.
What is there to see?
The grounds span roughly 8,300 square metres. Plants native to Madeira grow next to exotic species from Africa, India, Malaysia and Mexico, which over time turned the park into a small botanical atlas. Tall trees provide shade, and along the paths you will find:
- a small pond with ducks and black and white swans,
- a café for a break,
- an amphitheatre with a covered stage that hosts concerts and cultural events,
- an old marble coat of arms of the Franciscans and Portugal from the 17th century, a reminder of the monastery,
- the marble sculpture group "The Boys" (Meninos), made in 1943 and one of the park's best-known artworks.
A key moment in the garden's story came in 1992, when a modern amphitheatre opened. It turned a quiet green corner into a lively cultural venue.
Why visit?
The garden is a good pause between sightseeing and a stroll along the seafront. You do not need long: an hour is enough to walk the paths, look at plants from around the world, find the coat of arms and the sculpture, and sit by the pond. If a concert is on at the amphitheatre, the visit can become the highlight of your evening.
