Jardim Panorâmico

Funchal, Portugal

About this place

Jardim Panorâmico is a terraced public park in Funchal, Madeira, with views over the Atlantic Ocean and the city waterfront. It sits in the Lido district along Estrada Monumental and combines a quiet garden with a play area for children.

Where is Jardim Panorâmico and how big is it?

The garden lies on the western side of Funchal, in the Lido area, beside Estrada Monumental, the broad road that follows the coastline. It covers roughly 5,400 square metres at an altitude of about 46 metres above sea level (coordinates 32.6369 N, 16.9387 W). The park opened to the public in April 2005. It is laid out on several levels, so a visit means moving up or down through a series of platforms, each giving a slightly different view of the surroundings.

What is there to see?

The terraces are planted with flowers and shrubs from across the island, and well-kept paths run between them. It is an easy place for a short stroll, a rest in the shade and a few photos. A highlight is a set of azulejo tile panels by an artist known as Rigo. The panels depict the very views you can see from the garden, which makes it fun to compare the tiled picture with the real landscape.

What are the views like?

From the upper levels you can see the Atlantic and the seafront part of Funchal. On a clear day the Ilhas Desertas, the uninhabited islands lying south-east of Madeira, may also be visible. Visitors often name the outlook as the main reason to stop by, especially on bright days when the horizon is sharp.

What can children do here?

The park is popular with families. It offers:

  • 12 mini-golf holes that lead children across almost all of the garden's platforms,
  • a playground with five inflatables and two ball pits,
  • a few pedal cars,
  • padel courts overlooking the garden and the ocean.

That means one stop can combine a walk among plants with activities for kids or a game of padel.

Frequently asked questions

When is the park open? The garden is open daily from 7:00 to 22:00, so it suits a morning walk as well as an evening look over the city. Check the hours before you go, as they can change.

Is it good for families with children? Yes. Mini-golf, a playground and pedal cars make it one of the easier stops in Funchal when travelling with kids.

How long should I plan? A walk through the terraces and a look at the azulejo panels usually takes about an hour. If you want mini-golf or padel, allow more time.

Is there an entrance fee? Entering the garden is generally treated as free, while extras such as mini-golf, the playground or the courts may be paid. Check current prices on site.

How do I get there? The park is on Estrada Monumental in Lido, the hotel and seafront promenade zone of Funchal, so it is easy to reach on foot from nearby hotels, or by bus or taxi from the centre.

Who is it for?

It suits anyone looking for a calm, green stop with an ocean view, and families with children. It works well as a short break between exploring the old town and spending time on the beach or the Lido promenade.
