Parque do Covelo

About this place

Parque do Covelo is a public park in the Paranhos district of Porto, Portugal. It covers roughly 7 hectares of greenery in a densely built part of the city and has long been a place where locals walk, rest and bring their children. It is also known as Quinta do Covelo, the Covelo estate.

Where is Parque do Covelo?

The park sits in Paranhos, in the eastern part of Porto, along Rua do Bolama. Its coordinates are about 41.167° N, 8.605° W. It is easy to reach on foot from the surrounding streets, and it stands out as a clearly defined green pocket among residential buildings.

What is the history of the park?

In the 18th century the property was known as "Lindo Vale" or "Boa Vista" and belonged to a nobleman named Pais de Andrade. Around 1829–1830 his descendants sold it to Manuel Pereira da Rocha Paranhos, and it was then called Quinta do Paranhos. A later owner, the merchant José do Covelo, gave the place its present name. The estate eventually passed to the city and the health sector as a donation, and today it is open to everyone.

How has it changed over time?

The park was restored in 1987 to a design by architect Castro Calapes. A children's playground designed by architect Célia Peralta opened in May 2009. In 2017 a rehabilitation of about 3.6 hectares renewed pavements, footpaths and rest areas, repaired the existing waterfall, cleared vegetation and added new tree species. Electrical, water supply and rainwater drainage systems were upgraded as well.

What can you do here?

The park suits a quiet stroll, a rest on a bench in the shade or a play session with children at the playground. The waterfall and varied planting give the grounds the feel of a former country estate rather than a typical city square.

Why does it matter for the city?

Green space like this serves environmental purposes. According to municipal descriptions, the park absorbs carbon dioxide, helps control flooding, supports the recharge of aquifers, eases the urban heat island effect and promotes biodiversity. For Paranhos residents it is both a recreation area and an important part of the local climate.
