About this place
Parc Natural del Montseny is a protected mountain park north of Barcelona, covering part of the Montseny range, including territory within the municipality of Fogars de Montclús. The range belongs to the Catalan Pre-Coastal chain and is known for its striking landscape diversity — from valleys covered in oak and cork oak woodland to higher slopes dominated by beech forests and alpine meadows. This variety of habitats is the reason UNESCO designated Montseny a Biosphere Reserve.
Why is Montseny special from a natural standpoint?
The park combines Mediterranean and Central European climate influences within a single mountain range, a rare feature in this part of Spain. Lower elevations support typically Mediterranean vegetation such as holm oak and cork oak, while the higher, cooler and wetter slopes host beech forests more typical of Central Europe. This mosaic of vegetation zones means that species from very different climatic regions coexist within one relatively compact area. Montseny is also known for endemic animal species, including amphibians found nowhere else, which further underlines the ecological significance of the range within Catalonia.
How high are the Montseny peaks?
The highest points of the range reach close to 1,700 meters above sea level. On clear days, views from the summits can extend as far as Barcelona and the Mediterranean coastline. The park is crisscrossed by a dense network of hiking trails of varying difficulty, running through forested valleys as well as open, rocky ridge sections.
What can visitors find in Fogars de Montclús?
Within the municipality of Fogars de Montclús, part of the park's territory, there is an Information Centre dedicated to Montseny, opened in 2005. It houses a permanent exhibition explaining the character and history of the mountains, alongside a supervised picnic area and a children's playground. Since 2017, the centre has also offered digital and interactive resources, including a touchscreen with information on trails, attractions, dining and accommodation across the municipalities that make up Montseny. The park's administrative office is located nearby at the Masia Mariona estate, along road BV-5119.
What activities does the park offer?
Montseny is primarily a destination for hiking and cycling — its network of marked trails allows for anything from a short family walk to a full-day trek to the highest ridges. Viewpoints overlooking the Tordera river valley and the surrounding villages are also popular stops. Thanks to its proximity to Barcelona, the park is a frequent weekend destination for residents of the metropolitan area looking for accessible nature close to the city.
