Parc du Paradou

Vallauris, France

About this place

Parc du Paradou is a departmental nature park stretched across the hills above Vallauris, right over the Golfe-Juan bay on the French Riviera. Officially opened to visitors on 8 July 2011, it now spans 23 hectares, following an expansion of 7 hectares added to the original 16-hectare site. It's one of those spots where the dense urban fabric of the Côte d'Azur suddenly gives way to Mediterranean scrub and sweeping views reaching all the way to Cap d'Antibes and the Lérins Islands.

What should you know before heading out?

The park is crossed by a clearly marked discovery trail of roughly 1.8 kilometres, winding through varied vegetation zones — from typical Provençal scrubland to patches of more exotic greenery left over from earlier plantings. The main entrance sits at 1926 Boulevard des Horizons in Vallauris, with a dozen or so parking spaces available right at the gate. Opening hours shift with the seasons: from 1 April to 31 October the park welcomes visitors from 7:30am to 8pm, while from 1 November to 31 March it's open from 8am to 6pm.

Where does the site's history come from?

The land now occupied by the park wasn't always wild. During the last century it was home to a large horticultural and nursery operation that cultivated thousands of plant and tree species, both ornamental and fruit-bearing. That activity was abandoned in the 1970s, after which the land gradually grew wild and turned into a natural wooded massif. Today, departmental authorities are planting bitter orange trees (bigaradiers) on the site, aiming to restore a landscape echo of the perfumery tradition once closely tied to the Vallauris area.

What plants and animals live in the park?

Eucalyptus and mimosa dominate the vegetation, alongside other species typical of the Mediterranean climate. The trail alternates between dense Mediterranean maquis and more wooded stretches of hillside, giving the walk a fair amount of landscape variety over a relatively short distance. The park also hosts a rich range of wildlife: red foxes, European badgers, red squirrels, stone martens, European hedgehogs and bats frequent the undergrowth, while Moorish geckos and wall lizards make use of the rockier sections to hunt. A particular curiosity is a small heron colony nesting in the tall eucalyptus trees near the Château Robert area, gathering several dozen individuals.

Who is this park for?

Parc du Paradou suits visitors looking for a calm, scenic walk close to the coastal towns of Vallauris and Golfe-Juan, rather than a demanding hike. Its moderate trail length makes it a good fit both for families with children and for anyone after a short outing with coastal views, without needing to plan a full day in the mountains.
