Palacete Loures

About this place

Palacete Loures in Lisbon – a Viscounts' Mansion and Home of the Grémio Literário

Palacete Loures, also called Palácio Loures or the Grémio Literário building, is a nineteenth-century mansion in Lisbon's Chiado district. It was probably built in the 1800s as the residence of the Viscounts of Loures. Today it is best known as the home of the Grémio Literário, one of Portugal's oldest social and literary clubs.

Why is it called Palacete Loures?

The name comes from the noble title of its former owners. The mansion was the city residence of the Viscounts of Loures. Sources describe the construction date as approximate, saying only that it was "probably" built in the nineteenth century. Some texts call it Palácio Loures, although its scale suggests an urban mansion rather than a grand palace.

What is the Grémio Literário?

The Grémio Literário was founded on 18 April 1846 by royal charter from Queen Maria II and her husband Ferdinand II. Its purpose was intellectual and literary discussion. Among those linked to its foundation are two leading figures of Portuguese Romanticism, the historian Alexandre Herculano and the poet and playwright Almeida Garrett, together with the novelist Rebelo da Silva, the playwright Mendes Leal and prominent liberal politicians.

In 1875 the club moved into the Viscount of Loures's mansion on what was then Rua de S. Francisco, now Rua Ivens. The building has been tied to it ever since, hence its second name, the Grémio Literário building.

Architecture and interiors

The building is regarded as a fine example of Portuguese Romantic architecture. Its interiors are eclectic, mixing several styles. Rooms often mentioned include:

  • ground-floor salons with a variety of textile wall coverings,
  • the Green Room, in imperial style,
  • a Victorian bar,
  • a smoking room with carved wooden panelling,
  • a room in neo-Louis XV style.

A garden belongs to the property, and Lisbon's heritage records cover the building, its garden and the artistic heritage integrated within it.

Can you visit?

The Grémio Literário is a members' club, so this is not a standard open-door attraction. You can admire the building from outside while strolling through Chiado, and it is worth checking official sources for current access rules and any events open to guests.
