NPP Swamp

Doksy, Czechia

About this place

Swamp is a national nature monument on the shores of two bays of Lake Mácha (Máchovo jezero), within the administrative area of the town of Doksy in the Česká Lípa district of northern Czechia. The English-sounding name is not a placeholder or a translation slip — it is the official, registered Czech name of this protected site, used as-is in national conservation records.

What does the name actually refer to?

The protected area preserves the remnants of a fen and transitional peatland that once covered the entire basin now occupied by Lake Mácha. Before the lake existed as an artificial reservoir, this part of the Ralsko upland was an extensive wetland — fragments of that original ecosystem survive today specifically within the boundaries of Swamp, forming a mosaic of small pools, reed beds, and waterlogged meadows.

Why is the site protected?

Peatlands of this kind are rare in Central Europe, and much of the area's ecological value lies in its microscopic algal diversity. More than 170 species of algae have been recorded in the waters of Swamp, including several species new to science — desmids and diatoms thrive here in conditions of remarkable stability. Beyond microorganisms, the site supports rare and endangered vascular plants and animals tied to marshland habitats, including waterbirds and species dependent on boggy ground.

A history of expanding protection

Protection of the most valuable fragment — a small southeastern bay covering roughly 1.45 hectares — dates back to 1972. It wasn't until 2009 that the protected area was significantly expanded to cover its present extent of over 75 hectares. This expansion brought the broader ecological context of the peatland under protection, not just its historical core.

What visitors can see on site

Since 2010, a nature trail has run through the area, letting visitors learn about the protected flora and fauna without disturbing sensitive habitats. The route follows the shores of the Lake Mácha bays and combines natural history with the region's centuries-old fishpond management tradition — Lake Mácha itself began life as a medieval fishpond, one of the largest in the region.

Frequently asked questions

Is "Swamp" a descriptive label or a proper name? It's the official proper name of this Czech national nature monument, recorded exactly this way — in English — in Czech nature conservation registers, not a translation or an error.

Can visitors walk directly into the peatland? Access is limited to the designated nature trail, which protects the fragile peatland habitats from trampling.

What pairs well with a visit to Swamp? The site sits directly on the shore of Lake Mácha, a popular regional recreation destination, so the trail combines naturally with exploring the lake itself and the nearby town of Doksy.

How large is the protected area? Following the 2009 expansion, it covers more than 75 hectares, though its original protected core measured under 1.5 hectares.
