Novozámecký rybník

Pavlovice, Czechia

About this place

Novozámecký rybník is one of the oldest nature reserves in the Czech Republic, lying east of Zahrádky, roughly 7 km south of Česká Lípa, within the municipality of Pavlovice. The large fishpond, ringed by the country's most extensive reed bed, dates back to 1416 as part of a medieval water-management system, and it still preserves a remarkable piece of engineering from the era of Charles IV: a hand-carved rock gorge once used to fill and drain the pond.

What is the Novozámecký rybník National Nature Reserve?

Covering 368.27 hectares, the reserve was granted protected status in 1933, making it one of the pioneering conservation sites in the region. It was established to safeguard valuable wetland communities and provide breeding and stopover habitat for waterfowl and other wetland birds. The reserve forms part of the Natura 2000 network as an internationally important bird area, and since 2014 it has also belonged to the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj Protected Landscape Area.

What birds and plants live here?

The pond is shallow, with a maximum depth of no more than two meters, creating ideal conditions for aquatic and marsh vegetation — water lilies and pondweed float across its surface, while its banks are lined by extensive stands of reed and sedge. These conditions make the site a magnet for birds: around 220 species use the reserve for breeding or as a migratory stopover, ranging from ducks and grebes to birds of prey and passerines tied to reed habitats.

Where does the name come from and what is the site's history?

Historians rank Novozámecký rybník among the most significant medieval water structures in the Czech Republic, tracing its origin to the reign of Charles IV. A defining feature of its infrastructure is the narrow rocky gorge carved by hand into the stone, which allowed controlled filling and draining of the pond — a striking piece of engineering for its time and one that still draws the interest of historians studying medieval water management.

Is Novozámecký rybník worth visiting?

The site appeals above all to birdwatchers and nature lovers; because of its reserve status, visitor access is limited and concentrated around designated trails and observation points, allowing wildlife to be watched without disturbing its natural environment. The surrounding area near Zahrádky and Česká Lípa offers further attractions within the Kokořínsko – Máchův kraj region, making it easy to combine a visit to the pond with nearby castles and reserves.
