Montalegre Castle

Montalegre, Portugal

About this place

Montalegre Castle (Castelo de Montalegre) is a medieval fortress in the town of Montalegre, in Portugal's Vila Real District. A National Monument since 1910, it stands in the Barroso region close to the Spanish border and is one of the area's best-known historic landmarks.

Who built Montalegre Castle, and when?

King Afonso III founded both the town and its fortress on 9 June 1273, making Montalegre the head of the Lands of Barroso. The aim was to consolidate the northern frontier of Trás-os-Montes and to give the territory a clear legal and political footing under royal authority.

Construction was a long project. It began under Afonso III, continued through the reigns of King Denis and Afonso IV, and was completed in 1331, according to an inscription at the base of the south tower.

What does the castle look like?

The plan is built around four sturdy towers on square bases, linked by curtain walls. These enclose a parade ground, where a medieval cistern still stands, a vital water supply during any siege.

The keep is the highlight. Gothic in style and 27 metres tall, it is built of finely worked stone and topped with corbels and pentagonal battlements, which give the whole castle its distinctive skyline.

Was the castle ever upgraded?

Yes. During the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668) the fortifications were reinforced so the walls could better withstand the artillery of the day. Given Montalegre's position on the border, defence here mattered strategically.
