About this place
Câmara Municipal de Montalegre is the seat of local government for the municipality of Montalegre, in the Trás-os-Montes region of northern Portugal (Vila Real District). The town hall, known as the Paços do Concelho, stands at Praça do Município 1, a short walk from the old centre with its castle and churches.
What is this building?
It houses the municipal executive, which administers 25 parishes (freguesias), among them Cabril, Tourém, Pitões das Júnias, Salto and Venda Nova. Inside is the Salão Nobre, the formal hall where the council holds its meetings. For visitors it is mainly a landmark on the main square and a place to deal with official matters, not a ticketed attraction.
How old is it?
Montalegre's municipal story goes back to 9 June 1273, when King Afonso III granted the town its charter. The present town hall dates from the early 19th century and was heavily renovated in the 1870s and 1880s, so it is much younger than the medieval monuments nearby, yet it sits comfortably in the historic streetscape.
What can you see nearby?
Everything below is within easy walking distance:
- The castle, built under King Dinis in the 14th century, with a 27-metre keep, the remains of a cistern and a small exhibition on the fortress. The Ecomuseu do Barroso, covering regional traditions, is next to it.
- The Igreja Matriz on Rua do Castelo, with 13th-century origins, now home to the Museum of Sacred Art.
- The Igreja da Misericórdia, a plain single-nave church, and the medieval pelourinho (pillory column), a symbol of the town's old judicial authority.
Further out, the Serra do Larouco rises above 1,525 m and offers wide views. The reservoirs of Pisões, Venda Nova, Sezelhe and Paradela suit water sports, and villages such as Pitões das Júnias are worth the drive. Local specialities include cozido, posta barrosã beef and kid.
When should you visit?
The town hall keeps normal office hours on weekdays. For sightseeing in the Barroso highlands, late spring and summer bring long days and milder weather. Check opening times for the office and museums on cm-montalegre.pt before you go.
