The Monastery of Santa Maria de Bellpuig de les Avellanes is a medieval monastery located in the municipality of Os de Balaguer, in the Noguera region of Lleida province. Surrounded by hills and vineyards, it ranks among the most significant religious monuments of western Catalonia and remains an active religious site to this day.

History of the site

The community traces its roots to a group of hermits gathered around Joan d'Organyà, who settled near Vilanova de les Avellanes. In 1166, with the support of Count Ermengol VII and his wife Dolça d'Urgell, the hermitage was transformed into a monastery of Premonstratensian canons — the very first abbey of this order established in Catalan lands. Thanks to the generosity of the Counts of Urgell and donations from the faithful, the monastery quickly became the most important house of the order in the region.

The 13th century marked a period of great prosperity, as successive donations expanded the monastery's holdings and allowed for the enlargement of its buildings. Major construction work took place at the beginning of the 14th century, but stagnation soon followed, and the community was hit hard by the Black Death. Over the following centuries, the monastery's influence gradually declined.

A turning point came in 1910, when the buildings were taken over by the Marist Brothers, who continue their work there today, combining spiritual life with the preservation of the historic site.
