Mistério da Prainha

São Roque do Pico, Portugal

About this place

Mistério da Prainha is a protected area on the north coast of Pico Island in the Azores, in the municipality of São Roque do Pico. Its landscape was shaped by a volcanic eruption, and today it combines raw, solidified lava with vineyards and a refuge for seabirds.

What is Mistério da Prainha?

In Azorean usage, a "mistério" is a young, black lava flow where vegetation is only slowly regaining ground. This one formed during an eruption that began in September 1562 and ended in 1564, the longest historical eruption in the archipelago. The lava reached the ocean and built a low platform, known as a fajã, jutting into the sea.

What protection does it have?

Several overlapping designations cover the area:

  • Nature Reserve of about 716 hectares, part of the São Roque–Piedade volcanic complex.
  • Protected Landscape of Cultura da Vinha – Ponta do Mistério (about 77 hectares), designated in 2004, covering the lava platform and its traditional vineyards.
  • Natura 2000: the Montanha do Pico, Prainha e Caveiro Special Area of Conservation and the Zona Central do Pico Special Protection Area.
  • Important Bird and Biodiversity Area (IBA) under BirdLife International.
  • Geosite within the Azores UNESCO Global Geopark.

A small recreational forest reserve, Prainha (about 12 hectares), lies nearby.

Why visit?

This is one of the best places on Pico to see what a young volcanic landscape looks like. Black basalt fields contrast with the blue Atlantic, with the cone of Mount Pico rising behind. Pico's vineyards, planted inside low stone walls that shelter the vines from wind and salt, belong to a winemaking tradition tied to the island's UNESCO-listed vineyard landscape. At Ponta do Mistério that tradition sits right beside lava more than four centuries old.

What about wildlife?

The area matters for seabirds. The species for which the IBA was designated is Audubon's shearwater. The reserve also protects habitats typical of young lava flows, where mosses, lichens and native Azorean plants are the first to colonise.
