Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar: a Copper Age necropolis near Portimão
The Megalithic Monuments of Alcalar are a group of burial tombs forming a Calcolithic (Copper Age) necropolis. They stand in the civil parish of Mexilhoeira Grande, north of Portimão in the Algarve, southern Portugal. The site is a national monument and one of the most visited archaeological sites in the region.
What is Alcalar?
It is a cluster of prehistoric collective tombs. Researchers have identified 18 different megalithic tombs and tholoi (beehive tombs) here. Three main forms appear: a tholos, a burial chamber with a false dome comparable to structures at Mycenae; dolmens built from massive sandstone slabs; and chambers cut into the rock for communal burial.
How does Alcalar fit into Iberian prehistory?
The necropolis belongs to a wider social and cultural development in southern Iberia around 3000 BCE. Fortified settlements appeared then, stretching from Los Millares (Almería) and Valencina de la Concepción (Seville) in Spain to Alcalar and Leceia in Portugal. They show evidence of copper metallurgy, hierarchical social organisation and an early form of organised political community.
Which tomb matters most?
Monument 7 is regarded as the most notable structure. It dates to the middle of the 3rd millennium BCE, and a passage leads to a burial chamber with false domes and side niches.
How to visit
The site is conserved and presented as an open-air museum, with an interpretive centre on site that explains the context of the monuments. More information and some artefacts from Alcalar can be seen at the Portimão Museum, so it makes sense to pair the two visits.

Why go?
Alcalar shows that what is now southern Portugal was part of a developed network of settlements and burial traditions in the Copper Age. The variety of tomb forms, from dolmens to beehive tombs, lets visitors trace how funerary rites looked thousands of years ago. It is a good stop for anyone interested in archaeology and Algarve history beyond the region's beach image. Plan the visit as a complement to exploring Portimão and its surroundings, since the necropolis lies close to the city and combines easily with other stops. It is wise to check current opening hours and entry rules beforehand, as they may change with the season.
