About this place
Câmara Municipal de Silves is the town hall of Silves in the Algarve, home to the municipal government. It stands in the old part of town on Praça do Município, a short walk from the central streets. The building is a good example of civic architecture from the turn of the 20th century, and its interior is known for a dome decorated in Moorish-inspired style.
When and how was Silves town hall built?
Construction began in 1884 to a design by Gregório Nunes Mascarenhas, with master builder João Vitorino Mealha carrying out the work. The date 1891 is inscribed over the main door, but the building is believed to have been fully finished only around 1930. Despite what some travel listings claim, it is not a 17th-century structure but a late-19th-century one.
What is there to see?
The building is described as neoclassical. Inside you will find a central atrium and a large hall with a high ceiling. The highlight is the dome, whose stucco work draws on the Mudéjar tradition of Islamic-influenced Iberian decoration. Because parts of it risked coming loose, the decoration was conserved and restored in 2016, with work wrapping up at the end of November. The municipality ran guided visits to the dome during the project. The same works repaired the windows and main door, and the clock at the top of the building started running again after more than ten years standing still.
How should you visit?
This is a working municipal office, so treat it mainly as a stop on a stroll through the old town. The facade and surroundings can be admired at any time. The interior is usually seen when handling official business or during occasional events; check the Silves municipality website for current access.
