Fort Nossa Senhora da Luz in Lagos
Fort Nossa Senhora da Luz, also called the Castle of Senhora da Luz or simply Fortaleza da Luz, is a 17th-century coastal fort in the village of Luz, in the municipality of Lagos on Portugal's Algarve. It sits on a rocky outcrop above the Atlantic and is classified as a Property of Public Interest (Imóvel de Interesse Público).
How did the fort come about?
It grew out of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640–1668), when the authorities set about strengthening the southern coast. The fort was raised around an older fortification whose origins are uncertain. Sources mention a medieval castle, defences from 1575, or a round tower dated to 1624. Governor Nuno de Mendonça ordered the new work, and it was completed in 1670.
What was it for?
It had two jobs. It was meant to protect the neighbouring church of the same name and to reinforce the defence of Lagos Bay against corsairs and pirates raiding the Algarve coast. It is regarded as one of the more important examples of 17th-century military architecture along this stretch of shoreline.
What does the fort look like?
The plan is polygonal, with four bastions at the corners forming an irregular quadrilateral of roughly 200 square metres. It is a small structure, more charming than monumental, but its seaside position gives wide views over the ocean and the beach.
Can you eat here?
Yes. Today the private gardens of the fort house the Fortaleza da Luz restaurant, serving Portuguese cooking: fresh fish, meat dishes and the regional fish and shrimp cataplana. The interior has stone vaulted ceilings and the gardens around it are lush. On Sundays from 12:30 to 14:30 there is a jazz lunch. Note that this is a commercial venue, so access to the fort depends on its opening hours.
