About this place
Malinská skála is a rocky summit and protected natural monument set on a ridge that stretches eastward from Devět skal toward Dráteníčky, in the heart of the Žďárské vrchy uplands in the Czech Republic. The peak reaches 813 metres above sea level and rises above the village of Milov, within the boundaries of the Žďárské vrchy Protected Landscape Area.
What do the rock formations look like?
The outcrops here rise up to 20 metres high. Several individual blocks have earned their own names, among them Výspa, Srnčí věž, Škuner and Buldok, each reflecting the distinctive silhouette of the rock it labels. Together with the surrounding boulder field, these formations are a textbook example of periglacial processes — the repeated freezing and thawing of water inside rock fissures during the older Quaternary period, which gradually split and shaped the granite into its current jagged forms and scattered the loose boulders across the slope.
What can you see from the summit?
Malinská skála is known chiefly for its panoramic views. From the top, hikers can look out over Blatiny, Křižánky, Samotín and Sněžné, as well as Buchtův kopec, Pasecká skála, Drátník (Dráteníčky) and Čtyři palice. On clear days the view extends much further, reaching the Orlické hory, Králický Sněžník and the Hrubý Jeseník range, and on especially favourable days even the Krkonoše mountains with Sněžka are visible on the horizon. This makes the site one of the more rewarding viewpoints in this part of the Vysočina region, even though the summit itself is far from the tallest in the area.
How do you get there?
The rock is easily reached via the red-marked tourist trail, which makes it a popular stop for hikers and cyclists alike. In winter, the surrounding ridges of the Žďárské vrchy attract cross-country skiers thanks to well-maintained groomed tracks. Because of its proximity to Sněžné and other nearby villages, a visit to Malinská skála can easily be combined with exploring other sights scattered across this hilly range.
Why is the site protected?
The area was granted natural-monument status because of its exceptional geomorphological value: the rock formations and the accompanying boulder field represent a rare and well-preserved record of frost weathering and erosion from past glacial periods. Protection covers both the rocks themselves and the surrounding terrain, helping to preserve the site in something close to its natural state for future generations of visitors and researchers alike.
