Bílá skála (Žďárské vrchy)

About this place

Bílá skála is a frost-weathered rock ridge in the Žďárské vrchy range in the Czech Vysočina highlands, located about one kilometer east of the well-known Devět skal massif, right along the blue-marked hiking trail heading toward Křižánky. The formation sits within the cadastral territory of Sněžné na Moravě, in the Žďár nad Sázavou district.

How did Bílá skála form?

The ridge rises about 28 meters and stretches roughly 60 meters in length. It was shaped by frost weathering during the Pleistocene, when repeated freezing and thawing of water inside rock fissures gradually split the solid bedrock into the blocky crests visible today. The formation is built from migmatitic gneiss, which gives it a noticeably lighter color than the neighboring Devět skal rocks — the source of its name, which literally means "White Rock."

Why is the site protected?

Bílá skála holds the status of a natural monument (přírodní památka), designated in 1979 and covering 3.18 hectares. The protection centers on the relatively undisturbed gneiss outcrop, which serves as a nesting habitat for rare bird species. Peregrine falcons nested here until 1957; today the rock functions as a roosting spot and a potential nesting site for the area's growing raven population within the protected landscape area. At night, visitors may hear the calls of tawny owls and barn owls, and during the day the loud drumming of black woodpeckers.

Can you climb the rock?

Bílá skála is not open to casual visitors wandering onto the formation itself — given its protected status and ornithological value, direct access to the rock is restricted. Climbers, however, can ascend it during designated time windows outside the bird breeding season, arranged through the local climbing association.

How to get to Bílá skála

The most convenient starting point is the village of Moravské Křižánky, from which the blue-marked trail reaches the rock in about 30 minutes on foot. The route combines a stretch of paved road with a shorter climb along forest paths, covering roughly 2 kilometers in total. The trail is well marked and doesn't require special fitness — it's a gentle walk through the spruce-beech forest typical of the Žďárské vrchy.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a lookout tower or viewpoint at Bílá skála? No, this natural monument has no observation tower or official viewing platform — the attraction is the rock formation itself and the surrounding forest.

Are there other notable sights nearby? Yes, one kilometer to the west lies Devět skal, the highest peak in the Žďárské vrchy, reachable via the same trail network.

Is the site suitable for families with children? The approach from Moravské Křižánky is easy and short, but the rock itself is not meant for recreational climbing — treat the visit as a nature walk rather than a spot for children to climb on their own.

When is the best time to visit Bílá skála? Outside the bird breeding season (ideally autumn or early spring before nesting begins), visitors have a better chance of hearing or spotting local birdlife without disturbing it.
