Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld

Beernem, Belgium

About this place

Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld is a provincial landscape domain in Beernem, in the West Flanders province of Belgium, sitting between Bruges and Ghent. The domain itself covers roughly 230 hectares, and together with the neighboring Vagevuurbos forest it forms a complex of about 540 hectares — the largest continuous forest area in the province. Once a stretch of heathland and manorial woods, it is now one of the region's most visited spots for walking and family outings.

What is there to see inside the domain?

At the heart of the estate stands a neo-Gothic castle, built in 1893, surrounded by a park and a pond. It now houses the visitor center for the Houtland region, serving both educational and touristic purposes and acting as a starting point for groups and individual visitors alike. Next to the castle, on the site of its former kitchen garden, a large herb garden has been planted, home to around 400 plant species. The grounds also include a bird rescue center and the buildings of a former manor farmstead.

Why come here for a walk?

A network of marked walking trails crosses the domain, leading through wide stretches of forest, the heathland of the Heideveld-Bornebeek nature area, small ponds, and a distinctive avenue landscape typical of the region. One of the more popular routes runs about 9.3 kilometers and passes the herb garden, a wagon museum, and the bird rescue center mentioned above. It's a favorite among bird watchers and anyone looking for a long forest walk. The paths are free to use and open from sunrise to sunset.

Is it a protected area?

Yes. About 27 hectares of forest, heath, and meadow along the Bornebeek stream have been managed as a nature reserve by the Natuurpunt organization since 1985. The whole domain also falls within the Natura 2000 network, as part of a habitat area covering the forests, heaths, and valley landscapes of the sandy region of Flanders. This means conservation status and recreational use coexist here — visitors can enjoy the park while the most sensitive parts of the ecosystem stay protected.

How many people visit the domain?

According to figures from the province of West Flanders, the domain sees an average of 580 visitors a day. The main reasons for a visit are walking, relaxing at the on-site café, letting children play, and touring the herb garden. The visitor center in the castle keeps seasonal hours: in summer (from Easter until the end of the autumn school holidays) it's open daily from 9:30 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:30, closed on Fridays; in winter, hours are shorter, from 13:30 to 16:30, also closed on Fridays.

Who is this place for?

Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld suits both families looking for an easy, safe walk with children and nature enthusiasts planning a longer hike through forest and heathland. The combination of a historic castle, a herb garden, and protected nature makes it one of the more interesting stops in the Houtland region near Bruges.
