Vagevuurbos

Wildenburg, Belgium

About this place

Vagevuurbos is a sizeable forest complex of roughly 220 hectares located in the municipality of Wingene, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. It forms part of the Bulskampveld landscape park and sits directly alongside the Lippensgoed-Bulskampveld woodland — a domain forest of about 90 hectares bordered by a further provincial domain of around 230 hectares. Combined, these connected green spaces add up to roughly 540 hectares, making the whole complex one of the largest continuous stretches of public forest in West Flanders.

Where does the name come from?

The name Vagevuurbos refers to the Vagevuurkapel, a small roadside chapel standing along the Blauwhuisstraat. Naming a forest after a nearby chapel or historic landmark is a common pattern in this part of Flanders, and here the woodland simply inherited the name of the chapel that has stood at its edge for generations.

How is Vagevuurbos connected to Wildenburg?

The forest borders the historic Wildenburg area, and several of the walking routes through Vagevuurbos actually begin near the Sint-Joriskerkje, a small church close to the former Blauwhuis estate — also known as Wildenburg. From there, trails lead through the Wildenburg castle grounds, cross an area known as Sint-Pietersveld, and eventually reach Vagevuurbos itself. The woods around the nearby Hendriksberg rise historically belonged to the lordship of Wildenburg, whose seat stood at Blauwhuis, next to the local Wildenburg parish church. Walking these paths today means tracing the old boundaries of a historic landed estate.

Who manages the area, and what can visitors do there?

Vagevuurbos is managed by the Agentschap voor Natuur en Bos, the Flemish government agency responsible for nature and forest conservation. As a result, the site is well signposted and set up for outdoor recreation. Visitors will find a network of marked walking routes suited to different levels — short loops ideal for families, longer circuits for more dedicated hikers, and dedicated running courses for those who prefer trail running. The forest also regularly hosts organized sporting events, including nature runs that make use of its network of paths.

Where exactly is Vagevuurbos located?

The forest lies around coordinates 51.0971°N, 3.32023°E, in the heart of West Flanders, close to the administrative boundary between the municipalities of Wingene and Beernem. This central position makes it an easy destination for both local residents and visitors looking to explore a typical Flemish woodland landscape that blends historical layers with modern recreational infrastructure.
