About this place
The Evangelical Church in Trzanowice (Czech: Třanovice) is a modernist church in the village of Třanovice in the Moravian-Silesian region of the Czech Republic, roughly 7 km west of Český Těšín. The building belongs to the local congregation of the Silesian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession (SCEAV), part of the Frýdek seniorate.
How old is the Evangelical community in Třanovice?
The congregation's roots go back to the 19th century. As early as 1858, local Evangelicals established their own denominational cemetery in the village. For decades afterward, religious life centered on that cemetery, long before the community had a dedicated church building of its own within the village.
Where did the idea of building a church come from?
In 1894, the cemetery board decided to expand the existing mortuary there and convert it into a chapel where services could be held. Fundraising for the project began in 1896, and five years later a building commission was formed and received a plot of land as a donation for the future project. Those plans were then interrupted for over a decade by the outbreak of the First World War.
When was the decision made to build a proper church instead?
It was only in 1927 that a final decision was reached: instead of the previously planned chapel, a full church would be built on the same plot. The foundation stone was laid in 1929, and the resulting building took the form characteristic of the modernist architecture of its time.
What happened to the church during the Second World War?
The war left its mark on the church's furnishings — its bells were confiscated by the occupying forces for the war effort. It was not until 1944 that three new bells were cast at the Vítkovice ironworks and consecrated that same year. A few years later, in 1947, the congregation purchased a new organ from the Rieger company in Krnov, replacing the instrument that had served the congregation before.
How did the church's interior change over the following decades?
Another significant change came with a thorough reconstruction of the interior in 1987, carried out according to a design by architect Karel Cieślar. That work gave the interior much of the shape it has today.
Which church does the building in Třanovice belong to?
The church is owned by, and serves as the place of worship for, the local congregation of the Silesian Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession — a Lutheran Evangelical denomination present on both sides of the Polish-Czech border in the Cieszyn Silesia region. The Třanovice parish belongs to this church's Frýdek seniorate.
