Klínovec

Jachymów, Czechia

About this place

Klínovec rises above the Czech spa town of Jáchymov as the highest peak of the Ore Mountains, right next to the German border.

Where is Klínovec located?

At 1,244 metres, Klínovec is the tallest summit of the Ore Mountains (Krušné hory), a long ridge stretching along the Czech-German frontier north of Karlovy Vary. The peak sits directly above Jáchymov, a former mining town turned radon spa resort, which makes it the natural starting point for most visitors heading up the mountain. Its coordinates are roughly 50.396°N, 12.968°E.

How do you get to the top?

The easiest way up is the chairlift running from Jáchymov, which carries skiers in winter and hikers and mountain bikers in the warmer months. On the mountain's northern side, a second chairlift called Dámská serves visitors arriving from the German side of the border. Hikers who prefer walking can also follow forest trails to the summit, though this takes considerably longer than riding the lift.

What can you see at the summit?

The top of Klínovec is marked by a hotel topped with a 24-metre lookout tower, offering views that stretch across the Ore Mountains and down into the valleys on the Saxon side of the border on clear days. Right beside it stands an 80-metre telecommunications tower, a landmark visible from much of the surrounding region. In winter, the slopes around the summit turn into one of the larger ski areas on the Czech side of the range, with runs served by lifts on both flanks of the mountain.

When should you visit?

Winter, typically from December through March, draws skiers and snowboarders, since Klínovec is one of the snowiest peaks in the area and conditions often allow for a long season. In summer and early autumn, the mountain attracts hikers and mountain bikers who come for both the views from the tower and the network of trails through the surrounding forest. Keep in mind that winds at the summit can be noticeably stronger than down in Jáchymov, given the exposed terrain and altitude.
