About this place
Kasteel Wissekerke is a moated castle in Bazel, part of the municipality of Kruibeke in East Flanders, Belgium, one of the region's best-preserved fortified residences. Surrounded by a moat and extensive parkland, it now serves as a museum and cultural venue open to visitors.
How far back does the site's history go?
The origins of settlement on this spot go back to the 10th century, when a defensive line of fortifications was raised along the river Scheldt to protect the surrounding area, with comparable strongholds existing at the time in Rupelmonde and Temse. Construction of the castle in a form closer to what stands today began in the 13th century. Little from that early building phase survives unchanged: the oldest remaining elements are the cellars, dating from the 15th century, and the tower, built in the 16th century.
Who held the estate during the early modern period?
In 1510 the property was acquired by Lieven van Pottelsberghe, lord of Vinderhoute and a councilor at the court of Emperor Charles V. Following his death in 1531, the estate passed to Servaas van Steelant. The turbulent Eighty Years' War did not spare the residence — in 1583, during fighting connected to the Dutch Revolt, the castle was almost completely destroyed. The main tower visible today was raised shortly afterward, still in the same century, as part of the rebuilding of the ruined complex.
Which family left the deepest mark on the castle's history?
For centuries the estate belonged to the noble Vilain XIIII family, one of the region's more prominent lineages. It was from this residence that family members held the office of mayor of Bazel for 139 consecutive years, tying the estate closely to local administration and the municipality's history across generations.
What reshaped the castle's appearance in the 19th century?
In the first half of the 19th century, Burgrave Philippe and his wife Zoé de Feltz opted for a thorough renovation in neo-Gothic style. The architect François Verly was brought in to carry out the work, giving the building the romantic turrets and decorative details that still define its appearance today.
How is the castle used today?
The castle complex — the main building, gatehouse, iron suspension bridge and dovecote — was listed as a protected monument in 1981. In 1989 ownership passed to the municipality of Kruibeke, which has been responsible for its upkeep ever since. Today the castle functions as a museum and cultural venue, open to residents and visitors touring the Waasland region.
