About this place
Kasteel Solhof is a historic castle and park estate on Baron van Ertbornstraat in Aartselaar, in Belgium's Antwerp province, today operating as a hotel. The site is first mentioned as far back as the 15th century, though the residence visible today is the result of several later rebuilding phases.
What does the architecture of Solhof look like?
The main building stands on a rectangular footprint and is surrounded by a moat, a classic feature of Flemish manor houses of this kind. It is topped with a hipped roof, a form typical of the region's residential architecture. The whole estate is enclosed by a wall featuring two round corner towers dating from around 1550 — the oldest surviving elements of the complex, and a clear sign of the original residence's defensive character.
To the left of the main house stands an L-shaped former caretaker's house with attached stables, while a coach house sits to the right. This arrangement of outbuildings around the main residence was typical of larger landed estates in the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to keep the whole property largely self-sufficient.
Who owned the castle over the years?
The ownership history of Solhof is well documented from the 19th century onward. In 1837 the estate was bought by Baron van Ertborn. Following the death of his daughter, it passed to jonker Alfons and his sister Ludwina de Borrekens. The next owner was a Mr. Nyssens, a tobacco merchant — a change of hands that reflects how noble landed estates increasingly passed into the hands of wealthy industrial-era entrepreneurs.
After Nyssens's death, the municipality of Aartselaar decided to purchase the entire estate. The deed was signed on 13 January 1984, marking a turning point after more than a century and a half of private ownership.
What happened to Solhof after the municipality took over?
Shortly after acquiring the estate in 1984, the municipality of Aartselaar chose to resell the castle building itself together with its outbuildings, while keeping the surrounding park as public land — it still functions today as a municipal park open to everyone. In 1990 the buildings were sold to a hotel chain, which converted the former residence into the lodging and conference venue it remains today.
This split between a privately run hotel inside the historic walls and a public park around it makes Solhof accessible to all: even without a hotel reservation, visitors can walk the parkland and admire the moat, the surrounding wall, and the distinctive 16th-century corner towers.
