Karl Josef Heidler von Heilborn

Mariańskie Łaźnie, Czechia

About this place

The Heidler Obelisk is a six-metre monument in the Municipal Park in Mariánské Lázně, raised in honour of Karl Josef Heidler von Heilborn — the spa physician who shaped the resort's development for four decades.

Who was Karl Josef Heidler von Heilborn?

Karl Josef Heidler was born on 26 January 1792 in Falkenau an der Eger. In 1818 he took up the newly created post of provincial spa physician in Mariánské Lázně, succeeding Dr. Nehr, who had laid the resort's earliest foundations. Heidler held the position for nearly four decades, retiring in 1857, and authored at least twenty-five professional publications on balneology and spa medicine. In recognition of his service, Emperor Franz Joseph I raised him to the nobility on 12 February 1858, granting him the title "Edler" and the predicate "von Heilborn". He died on 13 May 1866 in Prague after suffering a stroke; his body was brought back to Mariánské Lázně and buried on 18 May 1866 beside his wife Theresa (1795–1861).

What was his connection to Goethe?

During Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's stays in Mariánské Lázně between 1821 and 1823, Heidler became a close friend of the poet, helping him with his mineral collections and offering medical advice. The friendship went far enough that Goethe stood as godfather to Heidler's newborn son.

What does the obelisk look like, and where does it stand?

The monument stands in the Municipal Park (Václav Skalník's Gardens), just below the Spa Colonnade in the northern part of Mariánské Lázně. The 6.3-metre obelisk is built from fine-grained topaz greisen blocks set on a low pedestal. Its front once carried a bronze relief with a laurel and ribbon motif, and the whole structure was originally topped by a pointed finial that no longer survives. The front face bears a Latin-and-German inscription honouring the "highly deserving Dr. Karl Josef Heidler", while the rear carries a German dedication from the donors.

Who paid for the monument, and when was it built?

The obelisk was unveiled in 1858 to mark the fortieth anniversary of Heidler's service at the spa. It was funded by grateful Polish spa patients, a detail that points to how international the circle of patients under his care had become.

What happened to the obelisk afterwards?

After the Second World War, there were plans to dismantle the obelisk for building materials, though this was never carried out. It underwent restoration in 1996, but the monument is again in poor condition today.

How do you get to the obelisk?

The Municipal Park sits right in the centre of Mariánské Lázně, just below the main Spa Colonnade, so the obelisk is an easy addition to a walk along the spa promenade. It's worth pairing with the other monuments to historical figures connected with the resort, several of which also stand within the same park.
